Week Six: Rich Fantasy Life, The Hobbit (6Points)

To start this off, Like most people I’ve only ever seen the movie—I don’t know many people who’ve actually read the story and I'm really grateful that taking this class gave me the opportunity to actually read the book.

I was definitely more intrigued reading the novel that anticipated.  The characters throughout the novel—especially the hobbit and Gandalf, were much appreciated.  On a side note, the book did indeed have a much slower pace and proved to be a challenge to continue reading, but over all the author truly captured my mind in the world within the book.  I enjoyed reading and learning more about the faintest information that was left out of the film.

My most favorite character was of course Gandalf.  I imagine exactly as the book described him to be—A magnificent and powerful Elf Wizard who holds the nature of being a wise and old widom figure towards Bilbo but he also served to help develop Bilbo to grow more as a character.  I thought it was very cheeky of Gandalf to place a seal of Bilbo's door, so that all the dwarves would show up.  Another thing about the book that I found fascinating was all the humour.  From what I can understand, the author uses a different sense of humour than most others would.  For example, in the beginning of the book we are brought into the story with a narration—who almost insults the reader in a humorous way.  The author comments on a series of various absurdities and highlights them with humor to highlight the balance between the negative and positive aspects within the novel..if that makes sense.  Either way, I enjoyed reading The Hobbit.
