Week Five: Witches; Akata Witch (5 points)

To be honest, because I've lived in such a conservative household I wasn't allowed to read any books that contained anything of the genre within witchcraft—except J.K Rowlings, Harry Potter Series…. Especially since I housed with my grandparents—Godforbid when I did consider bringing a novel that contained any demons or witchcraft, I would be lectured by my grandmother about how it's against our faith, but that didnt stop little me…. and that's why I moved out :D..

Aside from that, I really found Akata Witch very interesting.  It was very unlike anything i’ve ever read—Literally.  I was very intrigued by the plot of the novel—A young girl with albinism named Sunny unknowingly carried the abilities of a witch, and at such a young age was a powerful one too. I was pleasantly surprised about how differently the society of witches was portrayed within the book compared to other novels.  For example, a typical witch would contain characteristics such as; dark, gothic, or maybe even terrifying to society, but in Akata Witch, there were no such characteristics. Quite the opposite actually, what was portrayed in Akata Witch was more pleasant and comforting, I became more intrigued by their ways of teaching and how they viewed their surroundings.

Overall, the duration of the novel was again, very compelling, no doubt about it.  The plot and excitement as we joined Sunny through her duration learning to become a powerful witch is something that I will never forget.  I look forward to reading more novels such as Akata Witch.
